To The Concerned Population of Vigil City,

As tensions have risen in the city, tilling a fertile soil for rampant speculation and thereby giving rise to fearful sentiment throughout, I feel it incumbent upon me to address certain inaccuracies regarding the creation of a certain, so-called “IRON UNNATURAL.”

FIRSTLY: It has come to my attention that we, the Mages & Magicians Guild of our fine United Colonies, are widely rumored to have manufactured such a creature for use during the Great War effort of 1917—1918. For the record, I should like to state that such an endeavor NEVER OCCURRED.

Experimentation of the kind necessary to produce an “IRON UNNATURAL” would require a disregard for the safety and well-being of our fellow United Colonies Citizens that, quite frankly, no Mages & Magicians Guild would ever allow. The Mages & Magicians Guild STRICTLY REGULATES all new experimentation to ensure no projects are undertaken without the Betterment of Mankind at the forefront.

It is our Unbreakable Promise that all Mages & Magicians Guild experimentation be Registered, Licensed, and Undertaken ONLY within a Major Arsenal. I can assure you that NO SUCH REGISTRATION EXISTS within the halls of Tintagel Island Arsenal, as I, myself, keep a Vigorous and Watchful Eye over our Innovators in the Field. Furthermore, since these rumors began, I have personally spoken to the Masters of every Major Arsenal of the Mississippi, (e.g., Alderley, Wisconsin; Tristan Isle, Tennessee; Wormelow, Mississippi; Carhaix, Louisiana) and each master has assured me under Sworn Oath that NO SUCH EXPERIMENT OCCURRED.

SECONDLY: In recent days, I have encountered a conflicting claim, that such a creature was not created but captured, bound, and later deployed at Strasbourg—an engagement undertaken by Patch’s Seventh, Devers’ Sixth, Patton’s Third, Wilson’s Specials and the French First; a truly staggering number of dedicated soldiers, both Allied and United. With that many honorable, upstanding men fighting on that front, how is it possible that no substantiated sightings of an Iron Unnatural have ever been proven?

I will tell you: THE IRON UNNATURAL IS AN OUTRIGHT FABRICATION.

Dear Reader, allow me to ease your worries. Scientific Fact informs us that all Unnaturals possess a DEADLY ALLERGY to IRON. Just as fish cannot breathe air and we, ourselves, cannot breath water, neither can an Unnatural acquire and deploy cold steel in any form, be it sword or howitzer.

Propaganda posters during the war were just that—a means of inspiring fear in our enemy’s ranks and morale in our own. How attractive the idea that our nation’s might was strong enough to compel even the Unnatural Threat into defense of our great country! How terrifying that we possessed magic at our disposal strong enough to do so! The Hun’s almost immediate surrender after the announced “deployment” of our most grievous weapon at Strasbourg was, itself, the intended effect. Our weapon was not Unnatural in origin but terrestrial—Human Fear, nothing more, nothing less.

I understand that in these trying times, fear and suspicion are our natural bedfellows.
